I admit that we all desire to grow spiritually and all of these I am about to share are things that I have practiced in some way or the other in over 25 years of serving the Lord.

I am asked to preach sometimes in different churches or different events because of putting these things into practice.
These 25 ways to grow spiritually can help you a lot if you work on putting them into practice in your own life.
Throughout history, Christian leaders and thinkers have made spiritual growth in Christ essential to living a Godly life. The apostle Paul declared "Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind" (Romans 12:2), calling followers of Jesus to actively nurture their faith. Augustine of Hippo, whose confessions of sin and descriptions of God's grace still inspire today, wrote that he felt the presence of the Holy Spirit reshaping his character for the better. Ulrich Zwingli, a leader of the Protestant Reformation, encouraged examination of Scripture and preaching for inner transformation by God's truth. The yearning for closeness with Jesus emerges across denominations and cultures. Just as the body hungers for wholesome meals, Christ said "Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled" (Matthew 5:6)

Introduction
As followers of Christ, spiritual growth is not an option – it is part of the package of what it truly means to be a Christian. Jesus himself said, “I am the vine, you are the branches. Apart from me, you can do nothing” (John 15:5).
Our lives are meant to be centred around and dependent on him. Yet in the busyness of 21st century living, it’s easy to get caught up in the hustle and become disconnected from the Source. Relationships require ongoing nurturing, and it’s no different with our relationship with Christ.
The good news is, that spiritual disciplines exist to help us reconnect and foster intimacy with God even amid overflowing schedules.
My goal with this blog post is to provide practical ways for Christians to incorporate spiritual nurturing into each day.
Ideas like beginning your morning with Scripture and prayer, listening to worship music in the car, finding a faith-based mentor, and serving in your local church or community can bear tremendous fruit over time.
Just as we make time for what’s important to us in this life, we must prioritize feeding our spirit daily through Christ. When we do so, he promises we will bear fruit that will last.
I hope these 25 ways to grow spiritually help you on your journey with Christ towards greater intimacy with him and fulfilment of purpose.

By immersing yourself in the Word of God regularly, you can deepen your understanding of His teachings and strengthen your relationship with Him. Here are four ways reading the Bible daily can help you grow spiritually:
- Gain wisdom and guidance: The Bible is filled with timeless wisdom and guidance for every aspect of life. By reading it daily, you can receive valuable insights and direction for making decisions and navigating challenges.
- Develop a closer relationship with God: The Bible is God’s way of communicating with us. When you read it daily, you open yourself up to His presence and allow Him to speak to your heart.
- Find comfort and encouragement: Life can be tough, but the Bible offers comfort and encouragement in times of difficulty. Through its stories, promises, and words of hope, you can find solace and strength to persevere.

Make it a habit to read the Bible daily, and watch as your spiritual growth takes root and flourishes.
2. Memorize and Meditate on Scripture
One powerful way to grow spiritually is by memorizing and meditating on Scripture. When you commit verses to memory, you carry the Word of God with you wherever you go. This allows you to access it anytime, even when you don’t have a Bible at hand.
Memorizing Scripture helps you internalize the truths and promises found in God’s Word. It strengthens your faith and equips you to face life’s challenges with confidence.
Additionally, meditating on Scripture involves reflecting deeply on its meaning and applying it to your life. This practice helps you gain insights, find guidance, and experience a closer connection with God.
As you engage in this spiritual discipline, you’ll find yourself growing in wisdom, discernment, and spiritual maturity.
3. Pray Regularly
As you continue on your spiritual journey, one essential way to grow is by making prayer a priority in your life. Prayer is a powerful tool that allows you to connect with God and seek guidance, strength, and peace.
Here are four ways to incorporate regular prayer into your daily routine:
- Establish a consistent time: Set aside a specific time each day to pray. Whether it’s in the morning, during lunch break, or before bed, having a designated time helps create a habit.
- Find a quiet space: Create a peaceful environment where you can focus and eliminate distractions. It could be a corner in your room or a serene outdoor spot.
- Use prayer prompts: Sometimes, it can be challenging to find the right words to pray. Utilize prayer prompts such as gratitude lists, prayer journals, or guided prayers to guide your conversations with God.
- Practice different prayer methods: Explore various prayer practices like intercession, meditation, or praying through scripture. Experiment with different methods to find what resonates with you the most.
4. Participate in Corporate Worship
To grow spiritually, actively participating in corporate worship is a valuable and impactful way to deepen your connection with a higher power and foster community among fellow believers.
By joining in corporate worship, you engage in a collective expression of faith, coming together with others who share similar beliefs and values. This shared experience creates a sense of unity and belonging, reinforcing your spiritual journey.
Corporate worship allows one to reflect, meditate, and connect with the divine in a communal setting.
It allows you to draw strength and inspiration from the collective energy and devotion of the congregation. Through singing hymns, reciting prayers, and listening to sermons, you can gain new insights, find solace, and grow closer to your spiritual path.
5. Serve In The Church
I have served in Youth Ministry, Music Ministry, Men’s Ministry, IT Ministry, and Preaching Ministry. By actively serving in the church, you can find numerous opportunities to grow spiritually and deepen your connection with a higher power. Here are four ways serving in the church can help you on your spiritual journey:
- Developing Humility: Serving in the church allows you to put others’ needs before your own, cultivating a humble heart and a selfless attitude.
- Strengthening Faith: As you witness God’s work through your service, your faith is strengthened, and you become more confident in His presence and power.
- Building Relationships: Serving in the church allows you to connect with fellow believers, fostering a sense of community and providing support and encouragement on your spiritual path.
- Discovering Purpose: Through serving, you can discover your unique talents and gifts, and how they can be used to glorify God and make a difference in the lives of others.
6. Share your faith with others
Sharing your beliefs and experiences can have a profound impact on both you and those around you.
Start by engaging in meaningful conversations with friends, family, or even strangers who show an interest in spirituality.
Share your journey and the lessons you have learned along the way. This won’t only strengthen your understanding and commitment but also inspire and encourage others to explore their spiritual paths.
Additionally, consider joining a faith-based community or group where you can openly discuss and share your beliefs. By sharing your faith, you contribute to the collective growth and understanding of spirituality, creating a ripple effect of positive change.
7. Read Christian Books
I try to read at least 1 Christian book a month. Reading Christian books is a powerful way to cultivate spiritual growth and deepen your understanding of faith. Here are four reasons why incorporating this habit into your life can be transformative:
- Inspiration: Christian books offer narratives and testimonies that can inspire and uplift your spirit, helping you connect with your spiritual journey.
- Knowledge: These books provide valuable insights and teachings, allowing you to delve deeper into the principles and teachings of Christianity.

8. Listen to sermons and podcasts
Listening to sermons and podcasts is a powerful way to enhance your spiritual growth and deepen your understanding of faith. With the advancement of technology, access to sermons and podcasts from renowned spiritual leaders is just a click away.
I’m always listening to preaching podcasts on how to improve myself as a preacher of God’s Word.
These audio resources provide valuable insights, teachings, and perspectives on different aspects of spirituality and religion. By actively listening and engaging with these sermons and podcasts, you can expand your knowledge, gain new perspectives, and strengthen your connection with your faith.
Additionally, sermons and podcasts offer the convenience of being able to listen to them anytime and anywhere, making it easier to incorporate spiritual learning into your daily routine.
So, whether you’re commuting, working out, or simply relaxing at home, take advantage of this powerful tool to deepen your spiritual journey and grow in your faith.
9. Join a small group Bible Study
To continue your spiritual growth and deepen your understanding of faith, consider joining a small group Bible study. Many times we don’t understand a verse of scripture and this can help us a lot. Here are four reasons why this can be a transformative experience for you:
- Community: Being part of a small group allows you to connect with like-minded individuals who share your beliefs and values. You can learn from one another, support each other, and grow together in your spiritual journey.
- Accountability: In a small group, you’ll have people who will hold you accountable for your spiritual growth. They’ll encourage you to stay committed to studying the Bible, praying, and living out your faith daily.
- Diverse Perspectives: Small group Bible studies often bring together people from different backgrounds and life experiences. This diversity enriches discussions and helps you gain new insights and perspectives on the scriptures.
- Deeper Understanding: Through group discussions, you can gain a deeper understanding of the Bible and its teachings. You can ask questions, share interpretations, and learn from others’ knowledge and experiences.
10. Spend time journaling
One effective way to grow spiritually is by spending time journaling. Journaling allows you to reflect on your thoughts, feelings, and experiences, providing a deeper understanding of yourself and your spiritual journey. By putting pen to paper, you can explore your beliefs, values, and goals, ultimately leading to personal growth and development.
Journaling also allows you to document moments of gratitude, lessons learned, and prayers, creating a record of your spiritual journey that you can look back on for inspiration and guidance. It provides a safe space for self-expression and introspection, enabling you to connect with your inner self and strengthen your relationship with the divine.
11. Practice solitude and silence
Practising solitude and silence is a powerful way to cultivate spiritual growth. This has always been a challenge for me as my iPhone is constantly giving me notifications. Here are four ways you can incorporate solitude and silence into your spiritual practice:
- Find a quiet space: Create a designated area where you can retreat to find peace. This could be a corner in your home, a park, or a local library.
- Disconnect from technology: Take a break from the constant noise and distractions of technology. Turn off your phone, log out of social media, and give yourself the gift of uninterrupted silence.
- Set aside dedicated time: Schedule regular periods of solitude and silence in your daily or weekly routine. Use this time for reflection, meditation, prayer, or simply being present in the moment.
- Embrace the discomfort: Solitude and silence can be challenging at first, especially if you’re used to constant stimulation. Embrace the discomfort and allow yourself to fully experience the stillness. This is where true spiritual growth can happen.
12. Fast periodically
By voluntarily abstaining from food or certain types of food for a specific period, you can experience a deeper connection with your spiritual self. Fasting helps to cleanse the body and mind, allowing you to focus more on your spiritual journey. It can also cultivate discipline, self-control, and humility.
In addition to food, some of us can benefit from a phone fast or a social media fast.
During the fasting period, you can use the time that would have been spent on eating to engage in prayer, meditation, or reflection. This heightened state of awareness can lead to a greater understanding of yourself and God. Additionally, fasting can also serve as a reminder of gratitude for the abundance in your life and a way to empathize with those who are less fortunate.
Incorporating periodic fasting into your spiritual practice can be a transformative experience.
13. Give financially to the Ministry
Supporting a ministry with your financial resources not only helps the ministry carry out its mission but also deepens your spiritual growth. I always try to give 10% of my income every month to my local church.
Here are four reasons why giving financially to ministry can enhance your spiritual journey:
- Generosity: By giving, you cultivate a spirit of generosity and selflessness, which aligns with spiritual principles.
- Trust in God: Giving financially demonstrates your trust in God’s provision and ability to meet your needs.
- Stewardship: It encourages responsible stewardship of your resources, recognizing that everything we’ve belongs to God.
- Impact: Your financial contribution directly impacts the lives of others and helps spread the message of faith, hope, and love.
14. Forgive others
Holding onto grudges and harbouring resentment only hinders your progress. By letting go of past hurts and forgiving those who’ve wronged you, you free yourself from the negative energy that weighs you down.
Forgiveness isn’t about condoning or forgetting what happened, but rather, it’s a conscious decision to release the anger and bitterness from your heart. It allows you to move forward with compassion and empathy, fostering a greater connection with yourself and others.
15. Practice Sabbath Rest
Taking time to rest and rejuvenate is essential for your overall well-being. If you don’t do this you will experience burnout.
Here are four ways you can practice Sabbath rest:
- Set aside a specific day each week dedicated to rest and reflection. Use this time to disconnect from work and technology, and focus on nourishing your soul.
- Engage in activities that bring you joy and relaxation. Whether it’s spending time in nature, reading a book, pursuing a hobby, spending time in worship or bible reading, prioritize activities that recharge your spirit.
- Practice mindfulness and gratitude. Use this day to reflect on the blessings in your life and cultivate a sense of gratitude for the present moment.
- Connect with others and build meaningful relationships. Use your Sabbath day to spend quality time with loved ones and engage in conversations that deepen your spiritual connection.
16. Resist materialism
Resisting materialism is a key component in the journey of spiritual growth. It allows you to detach from the pursuit of material possessions and focus on cultivating a deeper connection with God.
Materialism, with its emphasis on acquiring wealth and possessions, can distract you from what truly matters in life. By resisting the urge to constantly accumulate more, you create space for spiritual growth and introspection.
Instead of seeking fulfilment through material possessions, you can redirect your energy towards nurturing your spiritual well-being. This can involve practising gratitude for what you already have, embracing simplicity, and finding joy in non-materialistic experiences.
Resisting materialism is a conscious choice that can lead to a more meaningful and fulfilling spiritual journey.
17. Use Discretion with Media and Technology
As you continue on your journey of spiritual growth, it’s important to exercise discretion with media and technology. In today’s digital age, it’s easy to get caught up in the constant stream of information and distractions that technology provides. However, by using discretion, you can ensure that your use of media and technology aligns with your spiritual goals.
Here are four ways to do so:
- Limit screen time: Set boundaries for yourself and prioritize activities that promote spiritual growth, such as meditation or reading spiritual texts.
- Choose uplifting content: Be mindful of the media you consume. Opt for content that inspires, educates, and uplifts your spirit rather than content that promotes negativity or materialism.
- Practice digital detox: Take regular breaks from technology to reconnect with yourself and the world around you. Use this time for reflection, prayer, or spending quality time with loved ones.
- Use technology for spiritual growth: Utilize apps, podcasts, and online resources that support your spiritual journey, such as guided meditations, spiritual teachings, or virtual communities.
18. Use spiritual gifts to build up others
You can cultivate your spiritual growth by utilizing your unique spiritual gifts to uplift and support others.
Through being involved in church I developed lots of gifts such as preaching and teaching. Things I did not know I could do.
One way to use your gifts is by using your gift of encouragement to inspire and motivate those around you. Offer words of affirmation and support to lift their spirits and help them navigate through difficult times.
Additionally, if you have the gift of compassion, show empathy towards others and lend a listening ear. Be present for them and offer comfort and understanding.
Another way to use your spiritual gifts is by using your gift of service. Help others in practical ways, whether it’s volunteering your time or resources.
19. Overcome personal sins
To continue your spiritual growth, it’s important to address and overcome personal sins that may hinder your progress. Here are four ways to help you overcome personal sins and grow spiritually:

Seeking accountability and mentoring is an effective way to foster spiritual growth and development. When you have someone who holds you accountable and guides you in your spiritual journey, you’re more likely to stay on track and make progress.
The good thing about going to church is you can meet people who are ahead of you spiritually. You are either around mentors or tormentors. Find mentors who are where you would like to be and ask them to mentor you.
Our Pastor is always mentoring us in preaching.
Accountability partners provide a safe space for you to share your struggles, doubts, and victories, allowing for reflection and growth. Through their feedback and support, they can help you identify areas for improvement and offer guidance on how to overcome obstacles.
Mentors, on the other hand, offer wisdom and experience, serving as role models who can inspire and guide you in your spiritual growth. They can share their insights and lessons learned, providing valuable perspectives that can enrich your spiritual journey.

Attending these events can be transformative, allowing you to grow spiritually and deepen your connection with your inner self and the spiritual realm.

- Offer prayers of gratitude: Take a moment each day to offer prayers of thanks for the blessings you have received. This act of surrendering to God cultivates a sense of humility and gratitude.
